RH 7.2 comes with 2.4.7-10. You can easily upgrade it to 2.4.9 provided
by RH.

I wasn't suggesting that it did. I got the devmode option directly from the
source (jn parse_options() in drive
SMP machine, right? Boot with the 'noapic' option and see if that helps.
Lots of SMP machines have IRQ routing problems with APIC which will cause
the symptoms you are reporting.
