X Windows, Nvidia and 2.6 kernels

Greetings all, Today I decided it was about time to move to a 2.6 kernel. I installed 2.6.8-2-686-smp for no other reason than that's what I got when I ran apt-get install kernel-image-2.6-686-smp. I booted into it and ran the nvidia driver installation program and that seemed to install fine. But
