Just calling in for a short time. Trying to help a young man find some
Linux based WORK, even as a volunteer.

What does "dmesg" say after this happens. The error message from
modprobe/insmod can be misl

Buy a real modem.
You can by external (cr*p, these days) modems for $65+GST or
thereabouts. For data connections they always work (just don't expect
phone stuff to go, it doesn't).
