RAID and a decent NAS is next on my list after I've got my firewall going,
which it should be this weekend. But I'm also reading about gigabit ethernet

So, keep 'em coming Don.
Which bits are you interested in hearing back on David?
I haven't tried setting up any RAID reporting yet.
I've been busy just planning how I'm going to

I suspect that being already over the edge it is actually a pre-requisite

Actually I don't think it does, see Steve's post. Of course it may help to RTFM
http:/
I have found the only way to get out of that type of mess, is the ctrl
alt sysreq followed by (while holding down the ctrl alt keys)
rseiub.
This seems to bail out and restart everytime with no problems left
behind

After the '#' comment character has been removed it tells the client
machine to configure the NIC using DHCP.
IMHO this is the correct way to configure static addresses on networks
with more than two, or possibly three, machines.

Don: IMHO & FWIW, building a Linux from scratch [1] or a Gentoo system
[2] would be a very worthwhile exercise for you to do.

[2] http://www.gentoo.org/
It would, I'm sure, be a very educational exercise for all of the rest
of us too. :-)

Thanks Rob, I had a nice coffee and took CS's advice and stuck to CLI! :)
I did a google for "kubuntu static address" and the first link was

Don, you seem like the guy who blames his tools when he does a bad job.
Why don't you have a nice cuppa and slow down a lttle.

ifconfig... by default kbuntu sets up eth0 for dhcp. I wanted a fix ip
but the interfaces file didn't have a prototype for the static set up.
