top shows memory usage at 28% - I allocate 512mb to the xp machine. cpu
usage of vmware is typically 1 - 3% at times like now when i'm using the
host machine and nothing is going on in the guest (not a problem).

To enter a virtual machine either click on it or CTRL-G.
To exit a Virtual machine CTRL-ALT.
And yes there is a performance loss.
