hi

I have a small problem that I can't figure out.....

I have a dual boot win98/Linux system (experimenting with ELX linux) - I needed to
reinstall win98 and of course lost the
MBR containing Lilo so couldn't boot back into Linux

The Linux emergency boot disk wouldn't work so decided to reinstall but wothout
fomrating the /home partition -
previoulsy this has retained my desktop setting etc

Now find the following:
my old username won't allow me to log into kde - but can login in to the console
If I make new users the same applies
Neither my old username nor my new ones will allow me to start X from the console
screen

It seems that this must be a rights issue but after spending 3-4 hours mucking around
I'm loosing patience - of course I
could reinstall and reformat all Linux partitions but that seems too easy (and I loose
all my settings and little extras!)

Anybody got any ideas about where to start or should I stop being pig-headed and just
get on with the reinstall. Any ideas,
comments, jokes happily recieved.

Cheers, Greg
