yep, never played with xorg.conf before, so wouldn't know where to
start. I guess I'm not really in an adventurous mood as far as editing

First off, ensure that you're driving the monitor properly. Make sure you're
not just running it with vesa or similar drivers, and update nvidia or ati to
the latest proprietaty ones.
I also had (have - see another post!) problems getting my new monitors to run
at all - as they were native 144
Make sure the refresh is no higher than 60HZ and that you are running at
the native resolution of the panel.
