I have (or am in the process of completing) switched to Gentoo at home. I
'could' even do this on my workstation at work.
However, as nice as Gentoo is, I don't see how it could be used in a
production environment. Meaning that the install phase is very intensive. We
could not do this on every cus
Checkinstall is my friend ,too . I've used it a lot.

And that's why I like checkinstall. It allows me to create a
Slackware, RPM or Debian script file for tracking those tars I install.

I've about decided to try Gentoo. I built my new system (dual Athlon 1.9s,
SCSI RAID) and in addition to RH 7.3 I left three spare partitions for
trying other distros. Gentoo appears to be a good approach and I don't
have the new system at the point where there is anything critical on it.

Brett, I think the best bet in your case is to free up some extra disk
space and try Gentoo on a spare partition. I still boot mine from grub
on my eWS3.11 partition. Once you are through the pain of the initial
installation, I'm sure you will be pleased. Have you ever tried to build

The main reason I like RPMS is that they make it pretty easy to update

Thank you for the offer - I'll probably take you up on it! I will probably
give it a try. I believe that Gentoos approach would fit the way I work.
I normally install Linux and then only upgrade when I have to - I do try
and keep up with a stable kernel but I don't do everyone. As for apps t

That sounds good.
One reason I use RPM is to track what's installed on my system. Does
Portage let you see what you have and what version ala rpm -q?

I've been doing that with Caldera and RH - use freshmeat and get the SRPMs
and build them for my system. If the SRPM is not available I use
checkinstall to make an RPM and install it. My concern about Gentoo is
that it uses a "non standard" - note the quotes!!! - system as compared to
RH and

I switched from Caldera to Gentoo because of the package availability
problem. So far Gentoo developers have not disappointed me. It seems
like a week or two after something new comes out there is a Gentoo
ebuild available for it, sometimes even sooner. There is a package list
and a daily changelog
