I seem to recall that freetype2 from the original source places the files where KDE3 expects them to be. However, the version supplied with Col 3.1 seemed to have a different layout. I think it was some transition version between freetype and freetype2. I solved it by installing the latest freety

I tried installing KDE3 from source using checkinstall. After much ado with libraries missing or outdated, much fussing with qt3 and a lot of trial and error, things seemed to be going smoothly, until . . . kdebase crapped out with: FontEngine.cpp:55: freetype/ftsnames.h: no such file or dir
