For the first time in the four year history of these lists (Quadlist, our first, was launched on November 10, 1997), someone is threatening legal action after being banned several times from one of our lists. Because of this and other issues, we have made a few small changes in the automated messages the list server sends out.
1. The email asking you to confirm your subscription used to read: All questions about this mailing list not covered in the FAQ (linked at <http://lowendmac.com/lists/>) or netiquette page <http://lowendmac.com/lists/netiquette.shtml> should be sent to <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> It now reads: Be sure to read the list FAQ (linked at <http://lowendmac.com/lists/>) and netiquette page <http://lowendmac.com/lists/netiquette.shtml> before joining the list. All questions about this mailing list not covered in the FAQ or netiquette page should be sent to <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Although subscribing to the list assumes one has read the list FAQ, we now explicitly tell people to read the FAQ and the netiquette page before confirming their subscription. We're doing this as an additional level of legal protection. 2. The message sent to subscribers to confirm their subscription already lists your subscribed address and notes that it's the only address you can use to post to the list or change your subscription mode. We have added a line which includes the posting address to the list, since several subscribers have emailed Low End Mac recently asking for this information. Remember, belonging to these lists is a privilege, not a right. Although we try to avoid banning anyone, it sometimes becomes necessary. As noted on the netiquette page: Mom is watching. The list manager has the right to block posting privileges or ban anyone from the list for vulgarity, trolling, flaming, name calling, threats, or other behavior detrimental to this online community. Banning is a last resort. Some list members have been rehabilitated after a banning. A few have been given a second chance, only to be banned again. Also note that the office of "list nanny" (assistant to the "list mom") has been temporarily suspended. At this point, only the list mom can ban troublemakers. I hope to come up with a better list nanny system in the near future which will include two or more nannies on each of the busier lists. As always, be excellent to each other.
