If you really need this effect (do you?) I will recommend you to use
more standard tags with may be semantic classes on them.
For example:
These times of woe afford no time to woo.span> Madam, good-night: commend me to your daughterclass="fullstop">.

Why not appropriate the s element for sentence and wrap the whole
sentence instead of just the period?
I've looked around for a stable solution which doesn't involve putting
, etc all over the content (that's presentational :-) ) and
can only come up with using the old tag (for strikeout):

text-decoration : none;
}
then, blah blah.blah blah. It seems to work,
