When this man starts his car, it's just the sound of silence

Bill Crews turns the key to his white soft-top convertible and hears
nothing.
Just the sound he likes.
The 55-year-old Southsider runs his 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit not on gas but
silently, using 10 Energizer batteries.
Not double-As, of course. Crews removed the car's engine last summer and
replaced it with deep-cycle marine batteries and an electric motor.
"I hate being dependent on oil," he said.
