My guess is that Word does not support the ETag or Content-MD5 http directives, and thus sharepoint server (correctly) is replying with non-cache directives on edit replies. IE DOES support these tags, and so ISA is able to cache based on these tags. Or it could simply be a purposeful (and

I meant that WSS/MOSS 2007 is a moving target, so any book written about it will be out of date. It's the unfortunate downside of current MS paradigm for platform software (no stable release like there was with WSS/SPS 2003, etc) of release when marketing says to and add features later.
