My Brother MFC 255-CW uses 23 Watts operating - I assume that is when it
is scanning - 5 Watts on standby and 3 Watts in "sleep mode" (deep
standby). One problem is that Brother tells me to leave the power on all
the time, OFF = .7 Watts. It cleans itself out once a day
automatically.

I have been using ink I buy from Carrot Ink about 1/3 -1/2 the price of
retail. They often have specials that include shipping. I used their
cart on my Epson Stylus Color 860 and am now using their carts on my
Brother MFC 255 CW. No complaints with the service or the product.

The head clogs due lack of use could be handled by a automatic weekly print
job. I've used cron on Linux and OSX to do this.
Another good idea is to buy head cleaner and soak the printer's cleaning pad
(if it has one) with it. That way the heads are always moist.

ink cartridges fit all their machines. A full set of B&W and color
cartridges costs $29.00 at Staples.
