Until 2004, these had only 2 lip seals and the slinger was an O ring on the
shaft. If the pump started dry, it would overheat (It burned the paint off
my cover) and destroy the impellor and seal. Also, any seal leak causes the
bearings to fail as it quickly corrodes the cage that holds the balls in
place. Once the bearings go bad, there is a fast flow of water sprayed
parallel to the shaft that enters the oil system at the pump drive gear. A
very unreliable pump! After 2004 there is a different pump with a ceramic
seal.

"Also, I must add, because he might not know, the raw water pump has two
seals, one next to the pump chamber, usually a "mechanical seal" that has a
ceramic and a carbon surface rubbing together making the rotating seal,
then a gap or two in the pump housing (and sometimes a rubber "slinger"
disk to throw water off the shaft) so any water leakage will drain into the
bilge, then a rubber lip seal to keep lube oil inside the engine. I"
