You're right, log4j 1.3 includes multicast.
However, we're stuck at 1.2 for the time being, and I wasn't even aware of this
appender until AFTER I created my own.. :-)

My recommendation is that you use the basic WriterAppender / FileAppender, and handle
the rolling outside the application.
One solution (which we use) could be to embed a date in the file name, and have the
appender restart at regular intervals.

Chainsaw logs all its internal log4j events to stdout, which appears in the Java Web
Start Console (or a log file configured from Web Start).
