I have the same problem and the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop need to be modified, the following is my file.Having had great success with LTSP3, we decided on the rollout of the new servers (RH9 kernel 2.4.20-8) to change to LTSP4. It all works swimmingly, once I overcame a problem with the ltspcfg script. Running option 7 (XDMCP configuration) insists that gdm is our display manager, even though we are running kde. The subroutine check_active_prefdm modifies the /etc/X11/prefdm script, but this technique appears to be unreliable on RH9; I say this as the modified script displays gdm rather kdm (on our machines). For RH systems, you should perhaps check /etc/sysconfig/desktop for the preferred dm.
