Well I may have got the wrong end of the stick from the OP,
but your post solved my problem, which incidently does involve a usb
keyboard
and trackball on a single usb connector.

this happens when i use either nsc or vesa in lts.conf
the TC is a compaq evo t20 32/64 homebuilt 2.4.26 kernel with no fb support
Interestingly both konqueror and dillo both display as normal as does
openoffice
