Here is a link to a script I use to clean up after users:

Its specific to my implementation but can be easily rewritten.

Sorry to say it but that is the most insecure way you could have done it. Setup
NIS and your permission kludge will be unnecessary.

I did and it was easy as pie with public key authentication and some custom
scripts. If I recall there are some limitations dealing with obtaining
filesystem statistics like freespace.

I would recommend using the login tracking and process accounting features of
your default system. Take for example the lastlog command. There are many ways
of automating this.

# Make sure hc* logins are legit.
echo Checking for undead logins
terminal_users=`who | awk '/hc*/ { if ($2 == $1:0) { print $1 } }'`
for terminal_user in $terminal_users; do
if ! ping -q -c 1 $terminal_user
I think that is an older version of the script. Be sure to read, modify, and
test before using it to purge the undead. I take no responsibility if it breaks
things.

Joe,
What distro are you running on the server
of these to register and destroy
the sessions.
As for ssh that is a different store handled entirely by the ssh daemon on the
server.

Use sessreg to kill the stale login. If there are any process left I have a
script I can provide you that performs the above and cleans up invalid mounts
as well. Unfortunately I am at work and have no access to my script collection.

He said it was serial. The mouse is a serial one Try the other serial device
nodes: ie: /dev/ttyS1. I'm assuming you have a custom kernel as you are using
Gentoo. Have you verified that all necessary kernel options are enabled or
inserted as modules?
Cory
Best advice replace the serial mouse with at least a ps/2.
