Hey Brian,

The number I have heard is 64M per client, so 8 gigs sounds good. Sounds like you have read the case study at at k12ltsp http://k12ltsp.org/rhs_casestudy.html They went with 1/25 server/client ratio using duel processing xeons. Also they seperated the job of application serving from the job of authentication and the " /home folder for all users is exported to each application server via nfs from an older quad Xeon based Intel server with a fast scsi drive."
As far as HD's they say "We've found that application servers are not disk i/o intensive. It's the ram that is important."

I have noticed that another issue to consider is the exporting of sound to the client stations. A lot of users in a computer lab are intersted in streaming audio and video and that may be problematic both from a load standpoint and from a "getting the sound to the client" standpoint.

Anyway...

my thoughts.

John

We'll be doing around 30 to 40 terminals for the lab. We'll probably be purchasing a server from monetary donations from here:

I'm thinking RAID-5 SCSI, with 15k RPM drives, and 8 Gig RAM to start out. Comments on this as a starting point for system resources???

What do you think? I like the sounds of this because they support LTSP and have proven LTSP compatibility, on top of their management suite that sounds like it simplifies alot of the tweaking required for LTSP.

The non-profit I'm helping out won't be able to afford IT staff to support, so I'm looking to minimize my time donated on an ongoing basis, which makes the management suite an added bonus.

Interested in all opinions on this box for an LTSP server.

Regards,

BC

Patrick,

Thanks for the links, been to most of them already, but it's good for others on the list.

BTW, was that an offer to donate the 25 NIC's with bootroms to the LTSP non-profit project I am working on?

perhaps. I also have the new 4 CDs that make up LTSP 4.0, having just
downloaded and burned two copies each. What do intend to install, an entire classroom?
