The X RANDR extension is coming down the line. Currently the latest
version of X and Gnome 2.2 (or greater? CVS for both, maybe?) support
the new extension. The RANDR extension allows dynamic resizing of X
displays (and apparently rotation as well).

If the 640x480 is included in the mode lines for your terminal(s) then
a workaround could be to let the child use the keys
to switch to a suitable resolution.
