did you tell crossover to redirect sound to esd? I don't know where this
option is located in cxoffice, but it can be selected easily in
wineconfig panel. Actually it just modify a few reg keys in the user.reg
or system.reg, so you may just edit by hand of there is no gui availab

Update:
I put esd as the sound driver for Crossover.
As a result:
Root works fine on the thin clients with sound.
The local user with administrative rights that was created at
installation time works fine with sound.
However:
smbldap users don't work at all.
another locally created user doesn't run

Try the 'strace' magic tool; it will tell you what does the program
try to open, read, write, errors returned, and where

Are the users members of all the necessary groups? (i.e. audio, cdrom, etc)
