We are testing Ubuntu 12.04 with the intention to upgrade from 11.10. All our thin clients use RDP exclusively. We have tried xfreerdp and rdesktop, and both have problems that we haven't been able to work out yet.
With xfreerdp, all seems well, but colours are displaying funny in Windows. For example, when I open Computer (Windows-e), some of the background, especially in the left pane, appears pink instead of white. Sometimes the pink turns white when you mouse over it. Sometimes the logon screen has patches of off colour, sometimes not. With 32-bit colour the logon screen usually looks good, but not always. With 24-bit colour it always looks off. Thus we installed rdesktop in the chroot and copied /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/screen.d/rdesktop from the 11.10 server. This renders normal coloration, but the problem we see here is that after the logon screen disappears (30 seconds or so with no user input), it doesn't reappear. The screen goes black but the mouse pointer remains. Using XINITRC_PROMPT_ON_EXIT=True makes no difference, it only inserts a dialogue box in front of the inevitable black screen. The only remedy appears to be to reboot the client and log on before the initial prompt disappears.
