2 minutes ago I found a way of starting the X-Server: just mentioned
XSERVER = radeon
X_MODE_0 = 1280x1024
X_VERTREFRESH = 75
that went fine. Unfortunately it doesn't want to have a vertical refresh
of 80 Hz, but maybe your tipp helps me on with that.

I've got a new mini-itx terminal here and bought a Club 3D Radeon 9250
PCI graphics card for it.
During boot-up, it switches to frame buffer mode (1 penguin - never saw
that on any of my LTSP terminals before) and it doesn't find a fitting
