AFAIK I do not think this here is a problem. Your X is running on server and all commands that you give runoff the server and report accordingly. The variable that controls your workstation thereafter is $DISPLAY:nn This is quite like you ssh in to another machine and then give host command, you will get response off that machine rather than the box from where you are physically connected.
