Using synaptic, I installed the Debian ltsp packages from the "testing"
archive ("Etch") on a 350 MHz Pentium II. All packages installed on the
machine are current.
When I run ltspadmin (v. 0.17) and attempt to install the ltsp packages,
I get a "failed the checksum test".

what version of ltspadmin are you using ?
The latest is 0.10.
There was a problem that was fixed a few days ago, and it seems to be
working much better for people.
If you don't have v0.10, try grabbing the latest, it's in the ltsp-utils
package at http://www.ltsp.org/ltsp-4.1.html
