I found it !!! - FYI don't for get to check the File Systems | Automatically
mount at boot - option.

Thanks Jim, doing the diff allowed me to find the problem. Thanks to
everyone else that had suggestions.

OH, and for anyone that is still thinking about my "can't write to /tmp"
problem, it must have been something different in Kernel 2.4.14 - when I
backed down to 2.4.9 the problem went away. I'll save that one for another
day.

Did you start with the ltsp_initrd_kit ?  It's got the filesystem that I
make into the initrd
and it has the config files for the kernels.

you could at least do a diff on the config file against yours, to see
that you included
everything that you need.
