newbie, too, but I've had pretty good results with Red Hat 7.3's GNOME desktop
environment and the Nautilus graphical shell. It's a Windows-like
experience. The command line is still available from the "Terminal
emulation program" button.

My question is, does a newbie have to worry about installing or using X
Windows when they are first starting to use Linux?
Should they learn how to navigate Linux just using the command line before
they start using X Windows?
