Problem solved. I just changed the umask=002 in the /etc/auto.misc file to
umask=000. I think that should be OK for a desktop machine in someone's home.
Now I can read and write to floppy and read the CD from Kword without a mount
command.

I had given up on autofs, but since you said it should work I took another look
and was able to get it working. The problem was in /etc/default/autofs. It
contains a line that says AUTOFS_ENABLED=false. When I changed it to
AUTOFS_ENABLED=true it worked. I don't know why it was set up like this.
