I'm not sure what you mean by 'killing' version 0.95, but you could change /usr/bin/pcmanfm (which is a soft-link to pcmanfm2 at the same folder) so that it points to your newly compiled version. It shouldn't cause much problem as long as you remember to change it back after you are done testing.
