As far as I know from my experience in using lustre if OST is down
client will certainly notice that not only by hanging but also by
showing relevant information in the syslog. What you want to do is to
look for LustreError messages in your syslog and some of them will tell
you which OST is d

If it a client is hanging because a OST/OSS is down, I would like to
know which OST is down thats all.
I don't want clients to complain...

I am not quite sure what you mean. Do you want a list of all the OST/
MDT devices?
You can do 'lctl dl' to list the devices, or use 'lfs df' to get
usage information per
