Another factor is old strings elasticity. It was discussed many times before,
but non of the arguments seem to be conclusive.
Were old strings so elastic that tying them in bundles did not affect gut

A 'V' shaped notch formed by two straight edges set at a small angle to
eachother can measure small thicknesses very accurately. The thickness of the
string is measured by how far you can put the string into the notch. It
wouldn't surprise me if something like this could have used.
Very convincing. Just very good, period. Better than I could ever do
dedillo. Can you tell us about your vihuela- or whatever your instrument is?
