International Competition of Early Music “Maurizio Pratola"

1. The Competition is aimed at young musicians interested in performing an 
Early Music repertoire.

The Competition is divided into two sections: section 1st dedicated to 
Lutenists born after 1st January 1982, section 2nd dedicated to Chamber 
Ensembles, the average age of members should not be over 35.

Enrolment for the competition must take place by 30th June 2017, using the form 
on the site www.consaq.it. The form should be sent to: Conservatorio Statale di 
Musica “A. Casella” - Concorso Internazionale di Musica “M. Pratola” - Via 
Francesco Savini s.n.c. - 67100 L’Aquila, Italy. Please enclose the receipt for 
the enrolment payment. The enrolment payment can be made by bank transfer to

The candidate may also enroll by filling out all the necessary information

You must also send a scanned copy of the payment of your enrollment. 

The enrolment fee is 70,00 € for solo Lutenists and 35,00 € for each musician 
in the Chamber Ensemble.

1. An identity document and a copy of the pieces to be performed must be given 
to the jury at the beginning of the audition.

The Jury, will be made up of famous musicians, musicologists and people working 
in the music sector and presided over by M° Paul O’Dette.

The final mark, which cannot be appealed against, is out of 100.

The 1st section of the competition, which is reserved for Lute- nists (the lute 
can be any historical variety of the instrument, from the vihuela de mano to 
the baroque guitar) involves a preliminary selection of the partecipants 
through the performance of pieces chosen by the soloist, lasting no longer than 
20 minutes. The first three in the classification will be admitted to the 
finals, where they will perform a 45 minute concert program. The choice of the 
pieces is free.

The 2nd section of the competition, reserved for the Chamber ensembles, 
involves a preliminary selection of the partecipants through a maximum 20 
minute performance. The first three ensembles in the classification will be 
admitted to the finals, where they will perform a 45 minute concert program. 
Contestants have free choice of their program, however this is restricted to 
pieces written no later than approximately the mid 1700’s.

The works performed in the preliminary selection procedure (in both sections 
1st and 2nd) can be repeated in final.

7. The performances must be played on period instruments in keeping with 
performance customs of the times.

The winning contestant will not be entitled to any royalties of any kind either 
video or radio.

Contestants will be admitted to the various heats in accordance with a calendar 
to be published on the site and notice board of the Conservatory.

10. The Jury has the authority to interrupt the partecipants performances in 
any moment.

PRIZES

1. All contestants will receive a partecipant’s diploma.

All finalists will be presented with a Certificate of their final ranking.

The Lutist who wins the First Prize will be awarded 1500 € and the possibility 
of performing one or more concerts for for the following Istitutions: Società 
Aquilana dei Concerti “B. Ba- rattelli” - L’Aquila, Grandezze & Meraviglie 
Festival Musicale Estense - Modena, Associazione Orchestrale da Camera 
“Benedetto Marcello” - Teramo, Associazione Culturale Harmonia Novissima - 
Avezzano.

The Chamber Ensemble that wins the First Prize will be awarded 2000 € and the 
possibility of performing one or more concerts for the following Istitutions: 
Società Aquilana dei Concerti “B. Barattelli” - L’Aquila, Grandezze & 
Meraviglie Festival Musicale Estense - Modena, Associazione Orchestrale da 
Camera “Benedetto Marcello” - Teramo, Associazione Culturale Harmonia Novissima 
- Avezzano.

A special Prize will be assigned for the best execution of a work by Marco 
dall‘Aquila, open to any candidate in the Lutenists Section who wishes to 
include it.

6. Finalists who do not win the first prize, will be reimbursed for travel 
expenses with 200,00 € for the Lutenist section and 300,00 € for the Chamber 
group section.

7. The Jury reserves the right to withhold any prize or to award special prizes.

Future concerts are to be held according to the wishes of the respective 
artistic directors, as with the planning schedule, as well as the manner in 
which the musicians are employed.
