With a 9-course you can always tune the 9th course to C, or leave it  
as a D, in the same way as you could change the tuning of the 7th  
course on a 7-c lute.  It would be nice to have a low D at the very  
bottom, as on the 9-course, without having to fish around on it, as I  
have to do on the 10-course.  Hmmm, maybe I'll just take off that  
10th course...
