One obscure feature of plucking which has always fascinated but eluded
me is the technique of using also the thumb to play on the lower
strings. Supposedly mainly feasible on 6 course instruments and a
narrow neck, it has apparently been in vogue and an open "secret" for
the
When playing a single line with t-i, it is clear that the thumb finishes its
stroke under the first finger. But not so clear to me is the position of the
thumb relative to the second finger when two note chords are interspersed with
the single line. Does the thumb finish its stroke under the
I'm curious as to when it is thought the rest stroke for the thumb came
into common use. Was it commonly used on the Renaissance lute? Do we
think Dowland used it early, or late, or at all in his career?
Thanks,

Making the transition from thumb-over to thumb-under technique has been
interesting. Holding the lute (without a strap) seems more
problematical, but seeing that the thumb and index finger pluck the
string in much the same place (unlike thumb-over, at least as I used to
use it)

Hi there lute list,
I'm looking for some specific information for my thesis I'm doing on
the viol. Does anybody know of any reference to the position of the
left hand thumb on any plucked instrument?
Thanks in advance all.

Dear All
In Lute News N=B079, P.25, we can read that The January 2006 (Vol
24, N=B0 05) issue has a paper on the technique of using the left
thumb, over the edge of the neck (seen
in some renaissance lute paintings) and often seen in folk guitar
techniques. I suppose the article
Hello all,
Does anyone have the problem of their right hand middle finger crashing into
their thumb when playing chords? If I drop my right arm down really far it
helps but this is uncomfortable even after a short time. My thumb is a bit
longer than most, but maybe I need to arch my hand or
Does anyone out there play guitar with thumb-in technique? How does
it work out with the higher tension strings? I've got a young person
interested in playing stuff on a guitar, not interested in a particular
style or technique; all I could responsibly show him is thumb-in, lute
style.

If you shouldn't have it I think I could send you some pages as a fax or

Hi Folks -
Speaking of starting baroque lute, do any of you know good studies
or exercises to get the right hand thumb going to the correct string?
