A focus will be made on the few dances types which developed through the 17th & 18th centuries (courante, chaconne, bourée, allemande, etc). Late Renaissance and Early Baroque Repertoire and Technique - An overview of the rich vieil ton repertoire in the first decade of the 17th century. Discussion of technique (thumb out, middle-index) slurs, ornaments, etc. While primarily intended for 10 course/archlute players, all 7-8 course players interested in that period are also welcome. Stephen Stubbs: The chitarra ala spagnola in the 17th century - Includes Italian and Spanish solo repertoire and the art of accompaniment deriving from both alfabeto and tablature sources (also duets for guitars and related instruments). Theorbists and renaissance lutenists and singers also welcome. Multi-instrumental, Multi-period Masterclass - All comers welcome. With an emphasis on the act of performing. What are we as performers trying to say? Why are we performing this particular piece? Pat O'Brien: General Technique Clinic - How to identify problems in our playing, break them down into manageable units, and solve them with a few simple steps. Intabulations and Intabulating: "Intabulation, not just a noun?" - How we might use our skills and experience with the literature of the lute to create our own repertoire. Robert Barto: Baroque Lute Masterclass (Second class to be announced) Grant Tomlinson: Lute Construction Workshop - At this summers LSA Workshop West, Vancouver lutemaker Grant Tomlinson will again offer a daily lute building class. He will have a small workshop set up on the UBC campus where he will demonstrate various lute-making techniques, discuss historical models, and show how to use this information to derive a working model. During the five morning classes of approx. 3 hours each, he will discuss how to make a mold, demonstrate fitting lute ribs to construct a back, discuss soundboard thicknessing and internal bracing, demonstrate rose carving, and more. Grant will cover the basic hand tools required to build a lute, and demonstrate how to use and sharpen them. There will be opportunities for participants to try their hand at some of the building techniques. The Lute Construction class is open to participants of all experience levels, and attendees are welcome to divide their mornings between this and other classes. Lute Maintenance Course - Learn how to tie frets, get your pegs in good working order, deal with strings that stick in their nut groove, work out a balanced set of strings, learn about humidity, fret placement and various temperaments. All of the subject material will be covered in one afternoon class period of about 1-1/4 hours.
