Who, exactly, was playing on these CD's and how old is the recording ? In the course of the modern revival of older instruments brass playing was one of the slower things to come up to snuff (it is very hard). For amusement value dig up the very old (late 1960's - early 1970's ?) Concentus Musicus recording of the Brandenburgs. The first movement of the 2nd is taken at an _incredibly_ plodding tempo, rumor had it to accomodate the strugling trumpeter. But there are people about now who can play in tune. A couple of years ago I had what once would have been unthinkable experience. I went to a concert given by a group that was basicly Robert Mealy trying to teach some young modern violinists to play baroque violin. They were doing some Biber and brought in two local baroque trumpet players for the gig. The trumpets were wonderfully in tune and the violins were, to put it nicely, playing in their own interesting temperament.
