According to the MIME Applications Specification mentioned earlier file
mimeapps.list gets sourced at $XDG_CONFIG_HOME and
$XDG_DATA_HOME/applications with the former taking precedence over the
latter, environment variables according to the Base Directory

Thanks for the quick response. I started having problems when I clicked on
the wrong button and inadvertently
made Firefox my default browser. Since I did that, I can't get the Chrome
"Default Browser" dialog to work. I click
the button and nothing apparently happens. The setting isn't saved.
