Currently we storm right on after a bad setup, and end up with some
obscure error when compiling. In 1.3, the error is flagged at configure
time correctly

This error usually means that your QTDIR variable was not set correctly.

Not all labels are shown in the reference dialog.
File->New, make a displayed equation with a label.
insert->cross reference doesn't show it.
