I can reproduce with LyX 2.1git on Ubuntu 13.10 and TeX Live 2013:
1. Open examples/JASA.lyx
2. Go to Document > Settings > Fonts and click on "Use non-TeX fonts".
3. Change the three fonts to "FreeSans"
4. Export to PDF with XeTeX or LuaTeX.
Eventually a dialog appears with <>
Exporting to .tex
