The LaTeX way would be \providecommand. This does nothing if the command

when making a presentation i usually take an existing document (article),
change class (to beamer), and then edit it.
i have noticed that if my first document contains custom bullets this procedure
does not work.
the custom bullets are not cleared on the layout switch, and beamer stumbles
