to check english, german and italian text, where the best dictionary

is there some document on German spellchecking?
If not, how would one accomplish such a thing? The problem are 'of
course' the special characters. My ispell dictionary contains the
letter a-umlaut as "a whereas the LyX-document contains it as 'real'
a-umlaut.
