newrecommand doesn't work

I've tried to change the chapter name like this: \renewcommand{\chaptername}{Practic} But in the dvi, or ps, it still shows "Chapter". I've exported it to latex, but the problem remains. Also i put \chaptername to verify that it hadn't changed. any idea about this?. It's very extrange. Using

Hi, vor etwa 2 Tagen bin ich mit dem LATEX- bzw. Lxy-Virus infiziert worden. Ich arbeite mit der neuesten Version, die es hier zu finden gab und habe nun schon einiges herausgefunden. Blos eins noch nicht! Wie ist es mir möglich Formeln automatisch nummerieren zu lassen? Ich weiss, dass es gehen
