It is pretty straightforward, but since you asked, I will elaborate:
First download the lyx sources since there aren't any rpm binaries yet
(or just wait until they come out.).
unpack the source (gzip -d ... , tar xvf ..)
run the ./configure in the lyx directory
If it complains about the xpm l

A couple of things you should check for:
1. location of bst file -- needs to be where tex can find it.. if it's in a local

there's a section on this..
2. Maybe closing the file and reopening it might help.. also ch

A few months ago Dekel gave sombody on the list the following advice on subequations:
If you want your formulae to be numbered like this:
8.46, 8.47a, 8.47b, 8.48,...
then write \begin{subequations} before the 2nd formula,
and \end{subequations} after the 3rd formula.

I am really interested in working in a windows environment on lyx since
most or my figures are created using Microcal Origin anyway.
Following the link at lyx.org I went to a great site about installing
lyx on windows. I saw the following:

I just generated a new bst file for use with my thesis. I then tried testing
it by making it the bst for a chapter of my thesis, then rendered a
postscript preview. The references remain unchanged from the way they were
formatted before.
