I don't know is there is a way to explain to lyx how to automatically use the command sequence: latex - makeindex - latex as it is done for the classical index. A simple wrapper script can handle this. An existing one is tex2pdf, but it produces pdf using pdflatex. Producing dvi is simpler.

Adding p+ psfonts.cmz p+ psfonts.amz to my ~/.dvipsrc and adding \usepackage{ae,aecompl} made the trick, now pdf files are quite good. Sorry for bothering you folks... jb
