Yes, this seems to be exactly what I was looking for.
Using the soul package and this command means I no longer have to
individually deal with LyX's problem in hyphenating underlined words.

I've got two small tables that contain footnote references. The correct
reference numbers appear in the dvi output, but the footnotes
themselves (and numbers) at the bottom of the page

I've been working on linux and have started using another computer which
uses windows. So I have downloaded the latest versions of the packages
(as of 6 sept 2005) and I'm using:
Lyx 1.3.6-1 for windows
OS=Win 200 Pro
Packages downloaded were:
ActivePerl 5.8.7.813
Python 2.4.1
ImageMagic
I imagine you output looks fine and this is a problem with display only.
Have you installed the Maths fonts (Bakoma)?
These help Lyx display math properly.
It is on the wiki http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX136 under maths fonts

I'm very confused about how to properly create an interword space. In
LaTeX the standard way is to use "\ " for an interword space and \@ for
the end-of-sentence spacing after punctuation. I was used to typing
bla, e.g.\ bla

each picture. I can not align the text with each pic correctly in one
