Installing the default MikTex via the Lyx installer fails. (A new bug?)
So I updated the old MikTex from 2.5 to 2.8 and deleted and reinstalled
Lyx 1.6 and referenced the tex.exe file in new MikTex .
Now I get a different messages when I click on the PDF icon to obtain a
PDF version of

I like to use the pdfx package which needs some external files (icc profile,
xmpdata file) in the lyx_tmpbuf folder. The filenames are hardcoded. How can
tell lyx to copy these files to the tmpbuf folder before compiling?

You are the first one reporting this. What error message did you get.
Note that MiKTeX is only installed together with LyX when it is not already installed. Note that

Turns out my laptop (Mint Gloria) did not have the latex-xft-fonts
installed (which should have been the first thing I checked).
Installing that cured the problem.
Apparently I have a caffeine deficiency. :-(

- slide gradually reveals successive lines of text
- audio track can be played in sync with the video
