abstractions and when one should dig lower. Is there a general rule?

aren't expected. For the majority of documents coming the other way,
it might as well be doc - txt - lyx

If that doesn't work, type X return to quit.
I also have tried
\setlength{hoffset}{-0.5 in} - that gets the error dialog to not look
as oddly but still does not help.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
