So, at least for now, I have to settle for keeping the
tables on the left

This is something I wish I had known about sooner.
In the past I have resorted to some tricks like
rotating the table to landscape, scaling the text size
or creating a new environment.

I got the idea from an excellent article on tables by Lapo Filippo Mori
in the PracTeX Journal 2007
