What is the best way to update LyX when a new maintenance branch/patch is
released? - Specifically on a windows machine.

Previously I went from LyX 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 by running the executable (
LyX-2.1.2-Installer-1.exe
<ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.1.3/LyX-2.1.3-Installer-1.exe>) and
installing 2.1.2 in the same folder as 2.1.1 (which was a folder named
LyX2.1).
It seemed to work and only a few settings were not carried over. But it
seems excessive to re-install the complete environment just to update a few
bugs and features.

So I am questioning whether this is the done practice or is there a more
appropriate way (i.e. a smaller update file)? I assumed this is what the
patches were for... However, I didn't know what to do with the patch file
once I downloaded it as there are is no documentation that I have been able
to find that indicates what to do with the patches.

Or is the process simply to run LyX-2.1.3-Installer-1.exe
<ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.1.3/LyX-2.1.3-Installer-1.exe> and install
LyX 2.1.3 on top of the existing 2.1 install (i.e. in the same LyX2.1
folder as the 2.1.2 install)?

Cheers
James
